Dear fans and supporters of Root Remedies,
Root Remedies started as a minimal skincare brand. Before its foundation, I was constantly looking for the next skincare solution — for that magical product that would give me beautiful, flawless, and perfect skin. I remember the process of trying different products from different brands, each promising amazing results. Some worked well, some didn’t. Then, I discovered pure plant oils and it gave me stunning results. That was when I realized a lot of people could benefit from using fewer products and just focus on natural products with high quality ingredients. That was why I created Root Remedies. I wanted to bring these natural, effective remedies to everyone so that they, too, could achieve healthy, beautiful skin.
The past few years have been an absolute whirlwind for Root Remedies. We have achieved amazing growth and are incredibly proud to have helped many people. Yet, with the global pandemic accelerating the growth of social media focused brands, I found myself struggling to keep up with the trends and changes of social media; I found myself growing more and more anxious along with the rapid increase of competition and expectations. In the struggle to compete, I often questioned myself — am I making the right decisions? Am I doing enough? Do I really represent the minimal philosophy that inspired me in the past?
It was then I discovered that this anxiety didn’t just manifest in Root Remedies, it existed in my personal life as well. The more I used social media, the more anxious I felt. The more I consumed, the more I felt the compulsion to consume more. Yet even after spending hours on social media, I still found my anxiety rising evermore. Having heart-to-hearts with some of my besties made me realize that I wasn’t alone. In fact, it seemed like everyone felt that way. The irony did not escape me as I scrolled through Instagram and saw people having the time of their lives. It seemed like everyone was happy, satisfied, and fulfilled, except myself. And yet, actually opening up to people revealed the exact opposite!
Upon further research, I learned that this was actually a well known phenomenon. Social media usage has long been linked to increased levels of depression, anxiety, as well as insomnia. Social media platforms thrive on usage — the more time users spend on these platforms, the better the platforms perform. As these platforms grow and mature, technologies have pinpointed the formula to give us the right image, post, or video at the right time to keep us hooked and addicted. Like a slot machine — when the outcome is unpredictable, we are inclined to keep doing the same thing again and again. And just like that, through the years of refinement and experimentation, social media platforms have mastered keeping users hooked and engaged.
The same thing happens with corporations and companies. As digital marketing on social media has expanded and advanced, companies have mastered how to create intent of purchase, feelings of urgency, and many other ways to trigger a sale.
That being said, I do not think social media and digital advertising are solely negative things. Social media platforms have brought communities together, they have instigated positive social change, they have allowed unique creators and individuals to share their talent and art. There are many wonderful things that wouldn’t exist without social media today. Digital marketing has enabled companies like Root Remedies to reach more customers and share our high quality products and philosophy. Instead of looking at just one side of the coin, we must consider all of its positive and negative aspects. Day and night just depends on which side of the earth is facing the Sun, after all. While there is the Yang, there is also the Yin.
In this age of information overload, the very platforms we socialize on, do business in, and share our personal thoughts and feelings on are the ones designed to keep us dependent. Is there a solution to this dilemma? Should we abandon all social media and live off the grid? While this could be a solution for some, I do not believe that it makes sense for many, especially with literal lives and livelihoods built on social media.
That was when we determined that the solution is not outwards, but inwards. We, as individuals, have little control over the external world, but possess power over what is inside. When you are constantly bombarded by an excess of information and expectations, the only solution is to be present.
When external factors rely on our mindless instincts and behavioral patterns to control us, the way to break free is to be present, and to be aware of one’s mind. Only when we are acutely aware of what affects us, can we choose not to be affected. Mindfulness is the antidote to anxiety. It is a way for us to navigate this increasingly complex and complicated world that demands our attention everywhere we go.
Because of this, Root Remedies will start advocating for the concept of Mindful Skincare. Mindful Skincare is about being aware of what you put on your skin — listening to it, respecting it, and being deeply and sincerely honest about what works and what doesn’t. It’s not about finding the magical product, but about developing a Skincare Practice. It’s not just about high quality, effective products, but also about being Mindful about things that affect our skin, including our lifestyle, diet, and mental state. It’s not about finding the best product, but about recognizing a combination of products, lifestyle, and practices that contribute to better and healthier skin.
We believe that skincare can be a venue to develop Mindfulness, and thus, we will also be promoting methods to develop Mindfulness and give practical guides and tips on how to integrate this into our daily lives in an effortless and simple manner. Mindfulness is a skill; it is something that can be practiced and improved upon. Moving forward, The Root Remedies team will do our very best to provide you with not just quality skincare products, but also how to practice Mindful Skincare and Mindfulness. I hope that practicing Mindfulness can benefit you as it has helped me in navigating this increasingly complex world.
With that, if you like what you’ve read so far, I sincerely invite you to join us in taking this step into Mindfulness. We look forward to what we can bring you further into 2022 as we enter into this new beginning.
Sincerely and Mindfully,
