Know your skin type, and what to do with it
Now that you know what skin type you have, here are some general tips as well as recommendations on how to achieve glowing and radiant skin.
Normal Skin
Blessed you are to be gifted with normal skin! Normal skin is characterized by even skin tone, few imperfections and little to no sensitivity.
Those with normal skin should focus on consistency by establishing a regular skin care routine. Focus on the basics, cleanse thoroughly to remove impurities and bacteria (double cleansing is a good idea if you are using makeup!), select a high quality oil or moisturiser to provide nourishment to your skin with antioxidants to appear youthful.
Recommended Oils: Rosehip, Black Seed, Argan
Recommended Face Mist: Damask Rose
Recommended Remedy Sets: Youth, Glow
Oily Skin
oily skin is characterized by a glossy sheen, usually later in the day
Those with oily skin should remember to exfoliate (twice a week is not a bad idea) to prevent clogged pores and reduce the risk of breakouts. Pay particular attention to thoroughly cleansing your skin twice a day. Aside from that, spicy food could also make oily skin worse, so you might want to go easy on the chilis!
Recommended Ois: Argan, Rosehip, Black Seed
Recommended Face Mist: Neroli
Recommended Remedy Set: Fresh
Dry Skin
dry skin is often flaky and feels tight
Those with dry skin will tend to have dry patches and flaking skin. Dry skin is caused by under-production of sebum on the skin. Those with dry skin will want to ensure that their skin is highly moisturised and protected at all times. Nourishing, hydrating oils like Rosehip, Virgin Coconut Oil or Tamanu are good fits for those with dry skin. Don’t be afraid of reapplying your toner/face mist or oils in the middle of the day if your skin is feeling particularly dry.
Those with dry skin will want to avoid exposure to direct air-conditioning. A humidifier is a worthwhile investment if your job requires you to be indoors all day! Exfoliating once a week is recommended to remove the layer of dead skin cells that tend to occur on dry skin. Finally, while it’s a good idea for most skin types to use Sea Buckthorn Pure Oil for night treatment, those with dry skin in particular will benefit more from it than other skin types.
Recommended Oils: Tamanu, Virgin Coconut, Rosehip, Sea Buckthorn
Recommended Face Mist: Damask Rose
Recommended Remedy Sets: Youth, Glow
Combination Skin
combination skin usually means an oily t-zone and dry skin elsewhere. oils have helped me to regulate sebum production :)
Combination skin has both oily parts and dry parts, and is normally characterized by an oily T-zone. Fortunately, many pure oils work for both oily and dry skin. Argan oil is an excellent balancing oil that both controls oil production and is quite hydrating.
You can even apply different oils on the oilier T-zone (Argan) and a more hydrating oil elsewhere. Exfoliating once a week is also recommended as it helps both oily and dry parts of the skin.
Recommended Oils: Argan, Black Seed, Rosehip
Recommended Face Mist: Neroli
Recommended Remedy Sets: Fresh, Glow
Sensitive Skin
sensitive skin is easily irritated, often causing redness and/or itchiness
Sensitive skin can be easily irritated. Thus, it is doubly important for those with sensitive skin to avoid potentially irritating ingredients. To do so, read the ingredient list and pay particular attention to the following:
Fragrance - this is a catch-all term that is not a single ingredient, but a collection or potentially irritating artificial aromatic compounds! Usually these are cheap and factory made so it is best to avoid it entirely.
Parabens - a common preservative that could be potentially irritating.
Sulfates - these are artificial foaming agents that create a thick lather, unfortunately, they can also be irritating to the skin.
Essential Oils - yes, you read right. Even natural ingredients can potentially be irritating, especially in high concentrations. It’s important to note that there are many EOs and some could be beneficial as well, although in general, it is better to go with less than more.
Other things to take note for those with sensitive skin is not to exfoliate too much (once a week is plenty!) and to introduce products slowly. Remember that each product introduced represents a list of potentially irritating ingredients. Opt for products with less ingredients and slowly introduce new products so you know whenever a new product is irritating to you! Patch testing is also a good idea, simply apply a bit of the product on your neck and see if irritation occurs after 24 hours. If it does, avoid! Skin sensitivity varies between individuals, even if 2 people have sensitive skin, they might be sensitive to different products at different levels. The key is to experiment and find out what works for you.
Root Remedies products are formulated in particular to be gentle and non-irritating, that is why our Pure Castile Face Wash is unscented, we want to reduce the risk of irritation as much as possible.
Recommended Oils: Rosehip, Argan, Tamanu
Recommended Face Mist: Damask Rose, Neroli (depending on individual’s sensitivity)

Acne-prone Skin
oily, dry or combination, all can be acne-prone
Acne-prone skin can be both oily, dry or sensitive. They are characterized by clogged pores, blemishes and breakouts. Fortunately, many high quality oils such as Rosehip, Sea Buckthorn, and Tamanu have acne-controlling properties as well as scar reduction properties!
Those with acne-prone skin need to be diligent with their skin care routine by cleansing thoroughly. Going to bed without cleansing is a big no-no! Aside from that, over-exfoliation is also something to be wary off as there could be a strong temptation to do so when there are blemishes.
If you dislike the texture of Tamanu oil or you simply prefer another oil, using it as a spot treatment is not a bad idea, especially for getting rid of blemishes. Our Blemish Serum is designed to combat sudden acne breakouts by killing acne bacteria.
Recommended Oils: Tamanu, Rosehip, Sea Buckthorn
Recommended Face Mist: Neroli
